The Graduate Teacher Induction Program (Department of Education)
Overview
As a teacher your role to support and inspire students to reach their full learning potential is vital. You will prepare students for their future so they can face challenges with confidence, be happy and secure, and contribute to their community. Your influence will endure long after a student leaves your classroom.
The Education Department of WA supports graduate teachers who are beginning their careers in public education to assist their successful transition from university to a teaching position. A structured Graduate Teacher Induction Program, that includes a professional learning program and support from an Advocate, has been developed.
Participation in the Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program is a requirement for all Department of Education graduate teachers.
The Graduate Teacher Induction Program has three components:
1. Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program
Over the first two years of teaching, graduate teachers in the public school sector are required to undertake the Graduate Teacher Professional Learning Program comprising four modules, each of two days duration.
Each module aligns to the AITSL National Professional Standards for Teachers and emphasises self-reflection and the sharing of practice as key elements of professional growth. The modules build the skills and understandings needed to become a highly effective classroom teacher.
Modules 1 and 2 are to be completed during your first year of teaching and Modules 3 and 4 are completed in your second year.
2. Graduate Teacher In-Class Coaching Program
This program provides access to up to 20 hours of individual support for graduate teachers in their first year of teaching. Trained Graduate Teacher Advocates make regular school and in-class visits to engage graduates in conversations aimed at maximising professional growth.
These experienced teachers provide targeted support, prompt deep reflection on classroom practice and challenge graduates to further develop and refine their practice. The program offers opportunities to focus on both current practice and future career development. This coaching and mentoring opportunity, available on request, is confidential and non-evaluative.
3. Induction resources
The Department provides some allowances and release time to support graduate teachers as they establish themselves as teachers. Your Principal will have further information about this.
